Visas
US citizen: No visa required for a 30-day stay. Hotels do required police registration.
Japanese citizen: No visa required for a 30-day stay. Hotels do required police registration.

Language Skills Needed
Many people in tourist related industries speak English. Learning the Cyrillic Alphabet is needed to read bus destinations and maps.

Cash Machines
Cash machines on the Plus / Cirrus / Maestro international networks are on nearly every corner in Sofia and are often found in small towns.

Currency & Currency Exchange
US$ 1 = BLV 2 (Bulgarian leva) on September 16, 2002.
The leva is locked to the Euro at a rate of BLV 1; = 0.51 €. It is a fully convertible currency to US$ and Euro at a moneychanger or bank.

Electricity
220V, 50Hz. Electrical outlets are for mainland European parallel round pin plugs.

Health
International Certificates of Vaccination are not required.

Tips
Round bills up.

Telephones
Public telephones take telephone cards.

Internet
Sofia has 56 kbps connections for BLV 1.50 per hour.

Lodging
European standards.

Transportation
Buses are cheap and slow. Trains service a limited number of destinations. Taxis are metered. Fares are fixed.
